Entry from: Darjeeling, India Entry Title: "Hamlets Are Beautiful" Entry: "Hamlets Are Beautiful Darjeeling has always been my favourite. But this time I was in Darjeeling to visit the Himalayan hamlets that we, from Help Tourism with support from West Bengal Forest Development Corporation, were creating as Social Tourism centres. Social tourism is where society is participating in development. The beautiful Tinchuley village is 30 km away from Darjeeling. We drove down to Tinchuley in two hours through magnificent mountainous countryside. Location was selected away from the main road to avoid too many flocking and destroying its ambiance. A few families with bigger accommodation were convinced to spare a few rooms and convert these to lodges with expertise from Help Tourism once permission from WBFDC was obtained. I spent two days at Tinchuley and accepted the comfort and enjoyed scenic beauty of Tinchuley. Gurungs of Tinchuley are the oldest and largest joint family. They have put up a guesthouse with 4 double and 4 four-bedded rooms with private toilet cum bath in one of the buildings. Food was fresh traditional dishes made of common regular items from house kitchen. There was a NRI couple with me who was enjoying the hospitality of the ethnic people and was learning their culture ...
